UNESCO World Heritage Day on June 6
46 monuments and nature reserves in Germany have been recognized by UNESCO as Heritage of Humanity. On June 6, UNESCO World Heritage Day, you can discover them all at the same time – on the Internet or on site.
UNESCO World Heritage is diverse: from the water management system in Augsburg, the monastery island of Reichenau in Lake Constance, to the Zollverein coal mine in Essen and the Wadden Sea. All World Heritage sites, over 1,000 worldwide, have one thing in common: they are each unique in a global comparison. They make it possible to experience the common history of mankind and our planet.
On UNESCO World Heritage Day, the 46 World Heritage sites in Germany will be offering guided tours and hands-on activities for children and adults, as well as virtual offerings. At unesco-welterbetag.de, there will be live streams, interviews, digital tours and the interactive photo campaign #WelterbeVerbindet.
Under the motto “Solidarity and Dialogue,” the World Heritage sites show that they are valuable places of encounter and international cooperation, especially in times of crisis.
UNESCO World Heritage Day has been held annually since 2005, as a joint campaign of the German UNESCO Commission and the World Heritage Sites Germany Association.
1,121 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 167 countries worldwide bring the history of mankind and the planet to life. 46 of them are located in Germany. World Heritage Sites are testimonies of past cultures, artistic masterpieces and unique natural landscapes. The protection and preservation of these sites is the responsibility of the entire global community. Since 2005, UNESCO World Heritage Day has been celebrated on the first Sunday in June at the initiative of the German Commission for UNESCO and the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Germany Association. This year, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, it will take place both on-site and digitally.
